Mouna Bennamani
Born 1989, Algiers, Algeria
Lives and works in Algiers, Algeria
Mouna Bennamani’s academic background is a perpetual dialogue between visual arts, cultural policies and heritage preservation. In 2020 Bennamani completed a degree in visual arts at the École Supérieure des Métiers des Arts et de la Culture of Aix en Provence. Previously, she graduated from the National School of Tourism and Heritage Preservation of Algiers before continuing her studies at the School of Arts and Design La Fontaine Paris.
Bennamani’s work “lies between figuration and abstraction” (Natasha Marie Llorens) and reflects on her socio-political position, exploring what it means to be an Algerian woman today. In 2017, she was selected by SciencesPo Paris for the ‘Women of the Future in the Mediterranean’ programme. In 2019, the artist won 3rd place in the ‘Young Painter’ competition, organised by the Société Générale Algeria. The artist has exhibited work in Algeria and internationally including at Dar Abdellatif during an art residency organised by ONU FEMMES, the Fiarte of Granada in Spain, in Tokyo, Japan with the UN and the IADL and in New York, for the exhibition ‘Waiting for Omar Gattlato’ at the Wallash Art Gallery of Columbia University.
