Nicky Marais has lived and worked in Windhoek as an exhibiting fine artist, arts project coordinator, arts educator and activist since soon after graduating with a Higher Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) in 1987.
Until her retirement at the end of 2019 Nicky Marais was the Head of Department of Visual Arts at the College of Arts in Windhoek where she was responsible for the accreditation of new diploma qualifications and in writing syllabi specific to the needs of young Namibian arts trainees. She taught final year painting, and was instrumental in the preparation of all final year students for their submissions to internal and external examiners. Since retiring she has been employed as an external examiner both by the College of the Arts and COSDEF Arts and Crafts Centre in Swakopmund,
In her own artistic work Marais employs a vocabulary of abstract forms and colour relationships that originate from the Namibian landscape and the social and political history of the Namibian people, as well conceptually from current events and local narratives. Herwork has also been informed by her interest and long time association with the feminist movement in Namibia.
Marais has collaborated extensively with artists of all ages who work in a variety of different media, including performance art and theatre.
Nicky Marais has exhibited extensively both locally and in South Africa, as well as abroad.
